Golden Globes Preview: Part 2

With the Golden Globes coming up tonight (on the Conan hating network of the oblivious) I thought I would give a few predictions, opinions on nominees, and condemnation of one or two who deserved nominations more than others.  The Globes are the second cousin to the more prestigious Emmy and Academy Award shows, but a fun precursor nonetheless by which to gauge the possible nominees of those greater honors.  Second of this two-part write-up, a look at the movie nominees.

Dr. "OH NO"...Mendes in Talks to Direct Bond 23

I'm not usually one to judge a directors choice to branch out into new territory.  In fact, I usually applaud directors for leaving the confines of their own comfort level.  Sometimes these endeavors can be great, and sometimes they can fail.  The latest example however leaves me with a strange taste in my mouth, a doubt, perhaps unfair, but in my mind appropriate.  Sam Mendes, director of such depressing (yet good) fare as American Beauty, Jarhead, and Revolutionary Road is in negotiations to direct...wait for it...the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise.  After the jump, a look at why, to me, this may not be the best choice.

The Lovely Bones Review

RATING:  C+

In nature, salmon travel upstream, challenging the order of things through an arduous journey against the natural flow of life.  In a way, this is also the momentum of Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) in Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones.  The characters of The Lovely Bones are constantly creating, esoterically attempting their escapes upstream.  They are attempting to escape from the forward moments of time, the eventuality of losing those moments that constantly pass us by.

Nun Of That on DVD

Today is the day of reckoning, the day that Scorpio Film Releasing's nunsploitation opus, Nun Of That is released to the kneeling masses by Camp Motion Pictures.  Now, I can't really review the film in any unbiased manner because I had a part in its production, however, I can give a short synopsis and some quotes by other critics who like myself, think Nun Of That is one of the funniest, most original indies in years.

Best Films of 2009

The ten best films of 2009 in no particular order.  It was a year of great performances, stellar Sci-Fi, and pure emotional substance that we all needed and could relate to in a year filled with recession, violence, and all that normal BS that surrounds us all.  Read about each one after the jump.
